Within three years two of the children are dead. The first secret is a vision of Hell. The second secret tells of the end of World War I, predicts a second World War and the fall of communism. The third secret is written down and secured at the Vatican. It will remain a secret until 1960... 1960: Pope John XXIII (23rd) decides to lock away the secret forever. Its predictions are not revealed. 12 May 1982: The last surviving shepherd child, now a Catholic sister, writes to Pope John Paul II. She warns that the third secret tells of the conflict between the Church and Communist Russia. 26 June 2000: The Vatican finally releases the third secret. It is rich in religious symbolism, including a prediction of the 1981 assassination attempt on John Paul II... Which happened sixty-four years to the day from the first Fatima apparition. An astounding vision of the future was hidden for 83 years. Or was it? By 1920 there was one surviving shepherd child. She was known to have a wild imagination and kept the supposed secrets to herself. She did not write down the secrets until decades later, after the end of World War I and the start of World War II. So the predictions were actually revealed revealed after the events. Many of these 1940s statements - now seen as the definitive texts - contradict what she alluded to in 1917. The prediction of John Paul II's assassination does not match events; the secret refers to a bishop being killed by a group, not the Pope being injured by an individual.
